• A scarifier is a quick and easy method of removing moss and thatch (matted grass) without damaging your grass.

Why use the scarifier?  Moss and dead grass is described as “thatch” which builds up on the soil surface and if not removed will stop water draining away easily. It prevents air circulating down to the base of the grass and this affects your lawns well-being.

How does it work? If you ask me it is a bit of magic but of my colleagues at Macroom Tool Hire tell me that the surface and subsurface of the lawn is rigorously abraded by penetrating metal blades, tines or prongs…..let’s stick with the magic.

The scarifier can be set at two depths:  For intense scarification, the blades are set to dig deeper into the soil cutting through shallow grass roots as they also remove thatch and moss. This last bit may sound strange but actually helps the grass develop healthy deep roots. Working with blades that are not fully extended would result to light scarification. The scarifiers will just pull and drag the moss and thatch from the surface.

What time of year do you use a lawn scarifier? This year has been extremely wet and  lawns are probably in poor condition. Scarifying is recommended twice a year – in Spring & in Autumn. Firstly, in the Spring to prepare the lawn and then later in the Autumn. It is recommended that you should scarify the lawn when the weather is warm and when rain on the way. (which should not be a problem in Ireland)

LOG SPLITTER – CUT YOUR WORKLOAD IN HALF (and save your back)

The Log Splitter is one of our most popular machines mainly due to the fact that it is so handy and easy to use 🙂

So the Basics: What is a log splitter? Essentially it is a mechanical axe which is designed to split logs faster and easier and than a traditional axe but also to provide a safer environment in which to do this.

How does a log splitter work?. Log splitters are incredibly safe to use and extremely straight forward to operate: you simply pull two levers and watch as the splitting wedge slowly works it way towards the log which is placed safely in-situ on the log splitter. The log is split by the sheer force of pressure applied by the wedge and does not require a build up of speed or momentum as is the case with a traditional axe. This significantly reduced the amount of bending, reaching and walking that I would normally have to do which resulted in less operator fatigue and more energy for splitting. In other words, it seriously saves your back and the aches that you get from using a manual axe.

So, why would I want a Log Splitter? Well anybody who has an open fire or wood burner will use one of these devices. You’ll find log splitters great for chopping wood into suitable size pieces of wood for each fire or wood burner in your home. This is a new product to Macroom Tool Hire so I took it out on a ‘test run’ last Saturday and the results were really fantastic.

It definitely saves time, money, energy & a lot of backsplash!

• Because it cleans a much wider path than when you you are using the wand, it takes much less time to clean an area. (usually it takes me 6 hours to do the driveway and balcony whereas this time it took me 3 hours….I was a very happy camper)

What is a Rotavator? For those of you who don’t know; Rotavators are powerful pieces of gardening machinery, often used in gardens and fields, to breakup, churn and aerate the soil. Safety Tips: When using any piece of machinery, the safety of the operator and anyone around them should be a high priority. Rotavators are not easy tools to operate for a beginner. Therefore, at your request, the staff in Macroom Tool Hire are always happy to give you a demonstration and expert advice in relation to the machine. They are powerful, weighty and have exposed blades so we will make sure that you have a good knowledge of the machine that you will be operating, particularly how the controls work. Some models have a built-in safety feature, but if not, knowing where the off switch is located is an obvious must. Wearing suitable clothing is another must when operating a rotavator. Proper work boots, ideally those with steel toecaps, are essential on a rear-line rotavator, as the blades on the machine work closely to the feet when the tool is operational. Safety gloves are also recommended, as although they would not be strong enough to entirely protect the hand from injury if contact is made with the blades, they can offer some resistance, and also offer a firmer grip on the handles of the machine. Ear and eye protection is also strongly recommended – a rotavator is a noisy machine and can spit out debris (particularly stones). When operating a rotavator, always be aware of what is going on around the area, and always keep animals and children away from the machine and the space in which it is being used. Flying debris could cause injury to them as well as to the operator.
